Li Ruzong, styled Zimao, was from Liaodong. He had great ambitions since his youth and excelled in horseback riding and archery, possessing extraordinary strength. In the early years of Emperor Wanli's reign, he entered officialdom through his father's influence and repeatedly participated in military campaigns, achieving victories wherever he went. He once accompanied his father, Li Chengliang, to suppress the rebellion in Korea and was appointed as the Commander for his contributions. Later, he served as the General of Jizhong and Liaoyang, guarding the frontier, and earned a reputation across the land.

At that time, Japanese pirates were harassing the southeastern coastal areas. The court ordered Li Ruzong to lead an army to counterattack. Li Ruzong was adept at strategy and often achieved victories by employing unexpected tactics. His subordinates were all brave and fierce fighters, and they won every battle they engaged in. However, he was stubborn and refused to listen to advice, which also became the reason for his setbacks.

In his later years, he was dismissed from office due to certain incidents and spent several years at home. He died at the age of fifty-six. Historians commented on him as "having extraordinary talents but being too stubborn, thus failing to have a good end."
